Description: This is the second edition of a classic physical medicine and rehabilitation board review that provides comprehensive, high-yield coverage of neurologic, orthopedic, and general medical topics in an outline format reinforced by over 500 illustrations and diagrams.
Purpose: This goal is to help residents prepare for part I and II of the PM&R boards, but it is not intended to a comprehensive textbook of PM&R. Because this book is about a third of the size of most major textbooks yet still provides a well rounded survey of the information residents need for board review, this is valuable for the PM&R community.
Audience: It is intended primarily for PM&R residents and medical students, but it is useful to attendings as a quick refresher in areas they may not be as familiar with. It also would be of use to internal medicine and family medicine practitioners who seek a highlighted summary of evidence-based PM&R facts. The editor is a well-respected physician-educator in the field.
Features: The board review is organized by subspecialties, including spinal cord injury, stroke, musculoskeletal medicine, and pediatric rehabilitation. Each section uses an outline format with a number of accompanying illustrations to reinforce the concepts. Within each section are subsections that incorporate such topics as bowel and bladder management for spinal cord injury, rather than having a separate category for bladder dysfunction. The stroke and spinal cord sections both begin with review of pertinent normal anatomy and are supported by clear diagrams, which allows readers to reacquaint themselves with areas of interest without necessarily having to consult another book. The musculoskeletal medicine section is well crafted, incorporating illustrations that demonstrate mechanisms of injury.
Assessment: This is the best board review book currently available for residents because of its easy to follow outline format, numerous concept-enhancing illustrations, level of detail that is appropriate for a review yet still conveys the essential information, and well-organized subspecialty divisions. This second edition incorporates the most current evidence-based information, increases the number of illustrations, and provides new information including biostatistics.
