Description: This book is a collection of presentations based on lectures created to describe the physics and chemistry of anesthesiology. The book collects the material from a noted anesthesia instructor based in New Zealand. For 25 years this clinician and scientist, Alan McLintic, developed a series of presentations designed to review the clinical physics of anesthesiology for a variety of medical disciplines.
Purpose: Anesthesiology and critical care medicine require appreciation of applied physics and chemistry related to the technology employed by these disciplines to provide care of patients. Topics discussed here are systematically reviewed beginning with core principles, followed by examples of relevance to patient problems with specific illustrations utilized to explain and demonstrate concepts. The book includes principles that are designed for broad application in the operating room or intensive care unit.
Audience: The primary audience for this book is anesthesiologists and intensivists. Senior trainees may also derive significant benefit from this compact work as might nursing and respiratory care personnel in the ICU. The book includes lectures made by Dr. Alan McLintic, an anesthesiologist based in New Zealand recognized for his teaching prowess by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anesthetists. Sadly, this noted teacher passed in 2020. A group of his students have collected his work to create this book which may be used for qualifying examinations created by this regional credentialing group of Anesthesiologists. Nine of Dr. McLintic's students and colleagues of who created this collection of presentations are based in a variety of teaching programs in anesthesia departments in Auckland, New Zealand.
Features: An attractive collection of lecture notes with related illustrations includes 32 chapters completed by an index. Initial chapters feature the physiology and physics of gas measurement and transfer. Among initial topics in this portion of the lecture collection is a review of gas laws, vaporizers, oxygen production and storage, oximetry, gas analysis, oxygen measurement and determination of pH, pCO2, gas temperature, and humidity. After the presentation of these introductory topics, the book reviews core concepts of respiratory performance. Among topics presented in this central group of respiratory presentations are anatomical dead space, closing volume, evaluation of airway resistance, the role of pressure-volume loops, and ventilator pressure and flow patterns. A final group of electrical topics includes a discussion of diagnostic tests, screening tools, equipment function when ambient pressure changes, electromagnetic principles, use of EEG monitoring, electrical safety, and finally the physics of diagnostic tests and screening tools. Chapters are concise and make excellent use of multicolored line drawings to demonstrate physical relationships and shading to highlight important findings in data tables. Each chapter emphasizes subheadings with bold type. The book uses reference citations from primary literature infrequently, consistent with construction of this book from a set of lecture notes.
Assessment: The book is a unique collection of wisdom having relevance to management of patients in a difficult technical environment undergoing complex procedures. It uses illustrations and tables. I was surprised at the relative lack of references from primary literature. The index allows access to key concepts located in this compact volume. Overall, the book encases an effective collection of technical wisdom. However, review of basic physical concepts may be needed to optimally use some of these presentations. I enjoyed the opportunity to examine this work.
