About the Author

Dr. S.S. Gupta (born 1-1-1929) currently Vice-Chancellor of the Agra University, is a D. Utt. in Economics. He worked as a Principal for 13 years and made bold experiments. He tried to give new direction to N.S.S., N.C.C, Proctorial Ministry of the College, College Library, College Buildings, Keeping of College Accounts, etc. He tried to place a Principal-Teacher, Principal-Non-Teacher and Principal-Students relationships on new foundations. He tried to develop in all a sense of belonging to and pride in the institution. It all gave excellent results and the college was given U.P. Merit Award twice. During his tenure of 13 years as Principal, almost 50 teachers earned Ph.D. degrees and almost 250 students were registered for their Ph.D. degrees in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Education and Law. But his tenure abruptly ended in discomfiture. The College Management could not relish his popularity. It encouraged teacher-politics and patted rowdy students. Principal Gupta was physically assaulted twice for not permitting copying in the examinations or allowing misappropriation or embezzlement of funds. Ultimately Dr. Gupta preferred to take pre-mature retirement, two years earlier than the due time of superannuation. Dr. Gupta has written several thought provoking books. Most of his research articles and Survey Reports have been published.
