About the Author

Ellen Bryant Voigt is the author of six volumes of poetry, most recently Shadow of Heaven, a finalist for the National Book Award in 2002. Her other books include Kyrie (1995); Two Trees (1992); The Lotus Flowers (1987); The Forces of Plenty (1983); and Claiming Kin (1976). She has also published a collection of craft essays entitled, The Flexible Lyric (2001).

Voigt has won numerous awards and honors including grants from the Vermont Council of the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Pushcart Prize, and the Academy of American Poets Fellowship. Voigt served as the Vermont State Poet for a term of four years until 2003, when she was elected Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets. Voigt developed the nation's first low-residency M.F.A writing program at Goddard College in 1976, and since 1981 has taught in the M.F.A. program for creative writing at Warren Wilson College. She resides in Cabot, Vermont.
