This compact resource offers ready access to information on exam preparation, equipment selection, clinical history, lab findings, etiology, and sonographic appearance for a wide variety of disorders. Based on the presenting symptoms, the reader is guided to the proper sections of the pocket guide to find information on disorders likely to cause the symptom. Each disorder section covers the most common causes of the disorder, related abnormal lab values, and sonographic appearance. Following these instructions, the sonographer can provide the physician with everything needed to make an accurate diagnosis, so the patient does not have to be called back for additional scanning.

Description: This handy, pocket sized book can serve as a reference for entry-level scanners and as a review for seasoned sonographers.
Purpose: It is designed as a resource for sonographers looking for a bit more information on disease processes, measurements, and certain sonographic characteristics.
Audience: In addition to student sonographers and staff sonographers needing a review, additional audiences for this book could include traveling sonographers and residents and physicians learning how to do abdominal, pelvic, and obstetrical ultrasound. As a registered sonographer, the editor knows what information sonographers need at their fingertips.
Features: The book covers ultrasonography of the abdomen and small parts and its use in obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics. An appendix covers information such as normal laboratory values, normal Doppler flow, and pregnancy problems. There is even short list of Spanish phrases! For each topic, the book goes over patient preparation, technical factors, and very basic protocols. Ultrasound findings and differential diagnosis are listed by most to least common, not by alphabetical order. My only complaints are that the book does not make clear how to measure certain objects and it does not include a diagram of the Couinaud segments of the liver, although it was mentioned.
Assessment: Working with ultrasound students, I know this book would be of value to them when they start scanning more independently. A sonographer who works in a specialty laboratory would appreciate this book when working elsewhere doing unfamiliar scanning. This is a useful guide that every laboratory should have and should be on student sonographers' booklists.
