Description: This third edition, last published in 2011, covers pediatric gastrointestinal endoscopy. An accompanying website includes detained endoscopic images and high-quality videos.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to outline and highlight the practical points of pediatric endoscopy as well as document the new and experimental uses of this diagnostic tool. This is a valuable objective and worthy of a third edition. The authors have done a good job balancing the utilization of the print and online material to better highlight and support some of the more challenging topics of pediatric endoscopy. In doing so, the authors have clearly met and satisfied their objectives.
Audience: This book has a broad audience, providing details and learning for the trainee to the experienced endoscopist. The book meets the needs of this audience by providing careful illustrations, algorithms, and a website to back up the more complex topics. The authors are highly credible with multiple publications and academic recognition within the field of pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology.
Features: The book covers a wide variety of subjects, from the history of endoscopy to state-of-the-art procedure that is currently more experimental than mainstream. The best aspect of this book is the way the authors look at every aspect of endoscopy, specifically outlining the benefits and utility as well as the contraindications for the various procedures discussed. In addition, the authors review not only the procedures but the associated disease necessitating the procedure. I also enjoyed the fact that the book is supported by the website and not the other way around. As such, the value of this book is the authors' ability to discuss the various aspects of each endoscopy for each disease process and portray the practical aspects of this highly specialized diagnostic tool. Although uniquely comprehensive for most subjects, I would have enjoyed a more thorough explanation and evaluation of some of the more experimental procedures.
Assessment: This is an excellent reference book for pediatric endoscopy. It is easy to use either by searching the table of contents, index, or supportive online materials. All the information is practical for readers and easily accessible on any electronic device. In comparison to other titles in the field, there are few, if any, books dedicated specifically to "pediatric" endoscopy. As such, this book is extremely unique. Furthermore, over the last 10 years since the last edition was published, there have been numerous new techniques, procedures, and state-of-the-art/experimental procedures introduced, justifying the new edition. I recommend this book to any pediatric gastroenterology trainee to attending-level pediatric gastroenterologist.
