Each president from Zachary Taylor to Ulysses Grant is provided with his own chapter, which are further subdivided into issues that were important to that presidency. Considering the time period examined, it is no surprise that issues of slavery, territorial expansion, Indian removal, and war dominate the proceedings. For the most part opposition speeches and letters are drawn from the ranks of government, with notable exceptions including the respective reactions of Chief Seattle and Frederick Douglass to Indian removal and the Dred Scott decision.
