Overview

In its first edition, Principles of Clinical Medicine for Space Flight established itself as the authoritative reference on the contemporary knowledge base of space medicine and standards of care for space flyers. It received excellent notices and is used in the curricula of civilian and military training programs and used as a source of questions for the Aerospace Medicine Certifying Examination under the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

In the intervening few years, the continuous manning of the International Space Station has both strengthened existing knowledge and uncovered new and significant phenomena related to the human in space. The Second Edition incorporates this information. Gaps in the first edition will be addressed with the addition new and revised chapters. This edition is extensively peer reviewed and represents the most up to date knowledge.

Description: This is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art-and-science book on what experts in space medicine understand of the physiology and organizational logistics of the field. The authors make a plausible correlation between the beginnings of space flight and long duration space journeys and the recognition in the 1700s of what was required for long ocean journeys. They mention with great respect a precursor, Dr. Busby's Space Clinical Medicine: A Prospective Look at Medical Problems from Hazards of Space Operations (Springer, 1968), and wish to follow in the tradition of that seminal book. What makes this such a comprehensive source is the inclusion of the work by their Russian counterparts and the acknowledgment of their contributions to space medicine and engineering.
Purpose: As the field is relatively new, this book provides the most current iteration of our knowledge. The authors have presented a masterwork, complete with all the statistics and references currently available.
Audience: This is a book for anyone with an interest in space medicine and anyone who wants to understand the extraordinary efforts that have been made to render space travel as safe as possible in such an unforgiving environment. The authors, two of the top experts in the field, have had a significant impact on the thought processes and known information.
Features: The first section outlines the unique attributes of space medicine, i.e. "what makes space travel so different." Interspersed are numerous historical facts and stories that make the book an enjoyable read. This is followed by a more traditional organ-system review of past experience and current thinking on the physiology of space travel. It is clear in the various chapters that every effort has been made to prepare and reevaluate the early decisions and assumptions. The great respect that the medical community has for the astronauts is abundantly apparent as is the trust that the astronauts have that the medical staff has thought through their safety and well-being. Formulae, figures, and photographs illustrate the science behind these endeavors, and there are extensive references of the literature upon which the art and science of space medicine is based.
Assessment: This book is an absolute necessity for every academic medical library. The authors are to be commended for a truly comprehensive, yet easily readable book on a fascinating topic.
