Introduction

Wisconsin became a territory of the United States in 1836. In July of that year the first public school of Milwaukee county came into being. It was a small two story wood frame building located in Milwaukee's 2nd Ward. The initial school was given the unpretentious designation: "Number 371 Third Street."

Regrettably there is no photographic record of the historic school house. Looking back it is evident that records of those early Milwaukee schools have faded over time. Over the years many records of the early schools have also been lost and sadly those records that were preserved are incomplete or have been damaged.

This photographic directory does not address the historical oversights of the past, but it does demonstrate that educational institutions will be remembered. This book is a reference source. It provides photographic documentation of Milwaukee County public schools of the present. For the first time, a photographic record of all the existing public schools of Milwaukee County have been brought together in one collection.

The photographs show different perspectives of every public school building. The full name of each school is shown with its address, grade level and building date. This directory also offers additional information about the school name and the present operational status of the school. All the school districts and schools, of Milwaukee County, are listed in alphabetical order.

This directory was current at the time of its publication, but in circumspect, understand, the world does not stand still. School districts change and inevitably this directory will need to be amended.

School districts are continually being transformed and reorganized. Some schools open and others close. The demographics of each district change, and this influences the way schools are utilized. The names of schools change as well, sometimes to better reflex the character and mission of a school. Some of the Milwaukee schools have become part of a "multi-plex."

Charter schools were introduced in the 1990's. These schools supplement the programs of the school district. Charter schools are supported by the school district but are administered independently. Some Charter schools offer special programs and curriculums that are not available in regular district schools. The number of Charter Schools has grown and will play a role in the development of urban education.

This directory was created to preserve a historical record for future generations.
