Puppy Goes to Lambergarten
In the continuing adventures of "Puppy" (non-gender-specific) our hero moves to the farm and joins in beginning classes with other farm animals, specifically the Lambs, and thus "kindergarten" becomes "Lambergarten". The story includes an adventure challenging Puppy's bravery, and saving a friend from a bad animal. The main point of the book, however is a continuation of the Read to Me strategy of encouraging reluctant (below grade level) middle school children to read more by engaging them with books that "appear" to be primary grade readers (the illustration style) but with near "chapter book" reading content (approx. 4th or 5th grade level) which can be done in a manner which encourages the individual by isolating them from peer pressure in their reading. The procedure involves having the student read to primary grades with the assistance of an accomplished reader from an upper elementary grade. (e.g. 7th grader assisted by 5th grader reading to a class or group from 3rd grade). The book, though too long for a single session works over mutliple sessions and can even be a bedtime reader for grandparents to read to their pre-school grandchildren, too. (Kids of all ages love the story, including the grey-haired ones.)
