Description: Transformation of student learning using simulation has continued to develop to optimize the academic and clinical experience using scenarios that are appropriate, supportive, and enable students to debrief to complete an effective learning experience. This review manual recognizes the important need to standardize the body of knowledge of healthcare simulation. It is a comprehensive standards and evidence-based guide that has been revised to reflect the latest test requirements and evidence-based research. The first edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide simulation educators in the U.S. and abroad to prepare for the certification exam. The authors focus on providing an overview of the simulation experience and ground it in the process of obtaining certification in this very important, yet concise, user-friendly manual.
Audience: The intended audience is interprofessional healthcare simulation educators who are interested in becoming certified for the work that they accomplish with every simulation experience that enriches the student learning experience. The authors have a wealth of experience in simulation education and have collected a group of contributors who are equally as experienced. This is evident in the breadth of information and resources the book provides.
Features: This excellent resource provides a succinct collection of information pertinent to know when preparing for the certification exam. The noted experts do an excellent job of carefully analyzing the test design and new evidence-based research. They present the information in a concise, easy-to-read outline format. The book is organized into sections, each pertaining to a different domain: professional values and capabilities; healthcare and simulation knowledge/principles; educational principles applied to simulation; and simulation resources and environments. With its simple but effective design, the manual is easy to navigate. Chapters are well organized and contain an abundance of information, including evidence-based simulation practice boxes, teaching tips, test-taking strategies, and case studies that foster critical thinking. Practice questions with answers are available at the end of each section with a practice test at the end of the book.
Assessment: This book and website provide an excellent, comprehensive resource for those seeking certification as a healthcare simulation educator. The domains addressed are grounded in standards and evidence-based research, making this book a must have for any individual seeking certification. Excellent resource!
