Chapter One
In Africa there is a very special place called Ngorongoro Crater. In this crater, lives many different types of African animals, from the smallest mouse to the greatest African elephant. This story is about one such mouse and one such elephant in their adventure together in this special place in Africa.
In this crater lived a great lion. He ruled over a great pride of lions and all the other animals in the crater. One day the great lion roared a great roar, and set forth a decree. The great lion said any animal found alone and not with its herd would be fair game for all the predators. So the word went out that day and spread all through the crater of the new decree from the lion. So all the animals started gathering into their own herds to keep safe from all the predators.
In the crater roamed a great elephant. The decree of the lion came to his ears one day and he pondered to himself, "I have been alone for so long I don't have a herd to go to. If the lions find me they might be strong enough to eat me. What shall I do?" he thought. As he was eating from a tree, taking in these thoughts, he heard a tiny voice from down below.
As he looked down, he saw a tiny mouse, so he bent down to hear what he had to say. "Please don't step on me!" ,said the mouse as he looked up on the great elephant. "I'm sorry," said the great elephant, "I didn't see you there."
So the great elephant and the tiny mouse started talking about the lion's decree that was set forth to all the animals. Just then the mouse had a great idea. He said to the elephant "I can help you and you can help me." "Tell me, how can this be true?" said the elephant. "You could carry me around and I could hide under your ear so the birds that want to eat me can't see me, and I can be the second person in your herd so that the Lions won't eat you." said the mouse. "You will never know that I am there and I can eat the food that falls on your back when you are eating off the trees." The great elephant thought that it was a very good idea and so a very unusual friendship started that day between a very tiny mouse and a very great elephant.
The mouse and the elephant became best friends and enjoyed each other's company very much.
One day the elephant went down to the watering hole in the center of the crater to drink and take a bath. As he walked by, the great lion jumped out and stood in his way. The great lion roared and said to the elephant "Why are you alone?" "I am not alone." replied the elephant. " Where is the rest of your herd?" Said the great lion.
"Right here" said the elephant and he called his little friend to come out. Well when the lions saw this they could not believe their eyes. "How can this be?" he said, "I have never seen such a odd herd in my whole life." The elephant said to the great lion "We are more than one, we are two, and that is a herd, so we are safe from you. Please let us pass."
The great lion honored his word and let the elephant pass to go to drink, but in his mind he was troubled by what he had just seen.
