About the Author

Bernie Burgess was enjoying success with the vocal harmony group The 4 Jones Boys, when he met and married Ruby Murray, singing superstar. "I wasn't exactly ‘born in a trunk’ but I came pretty close to it." He recalls. "I was born in Oxford in 1928, as a young child I remember being fascinated by some of the comedy greats of that period including The Marx Brothers and Buster Keating. I decided I wanted to be part of showbusiness. As a 12 year old I was working with my father in the New Theatre Nottingham. I was totally mesmerised when coming face to face with such stars as Old Mother Riley (Arthur Lucan) and her Daughter Kitty. Film stars i.e. as Flora Robson, Noel Coward and Gordon Harker, all appeared at the theatre. "Business was booming during the war, the public need was to be able to forget about war, bombs, black-outs, rationing and clothing coupons and to enjoy being entertained. Week after week the queues for each show almost encircled the theatre. The 'New' offered a complete array of shows from' Prior to West-end' productions, Variety, Revues, Straight Plays, Ballet and Classical Concerts. "I never had the urge to transfer from ‘Off Stage’ to ‘On Stage’ but I had a liking for harmony. I had a natural ear for harmony but I never dreamt that one day I would be part of a vocal group singing four part harmony. In 1953 I was asked to audition for a vocal group who came to the theatre. To my utter amazement the group asked me to join them right away as they were losing one of their members. "After a period of struggle we re-grouped, rehearsed a new act and launched ourselves as The 4 Jones Boys. My life changed when I met Ruby Murray, and we embarked upon a life together."
