Rudy: My Story by Rudy Ruettiger

Rudy became the inspiration for millions when a Hollywood film depicting his journey as a Notre Dame football player became one of the most influential sports movies ever made. In Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger's only autobiography, go behind the scenes to experience the heartache, triumph, and glory through Rudy's own eyes, and learn details of the ten years it took to get the movie made.

For the first time, the real Rudy shares his story of floundering through school with undiagnosed dyslexia and finding himself mixed up with a rough and rowdy crowd. "Football was my salvation in high school," Rudy believes, and while he dreamed of playing for Notre Dame, he never believed he was smart enough to make it to the elite group of higher education.

A poignant and high-energy storyteller, Rudy details failures and pitfalls along the way. He explains the persistence and determination it took to get accepted to Notre Dame, to suit up and play for twenty-seven glorious seconds, and to see the dream of his movie become a reality. Rudy is truly a real-life testament to the old adage that it is not how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get up again. He will motivate you to discover your own dreams and to them with unrelenting faith that anything is possible.

Rudy, My Story Daniel “Rudy” Ruettinger ©2012 With Mark Dagostina Thomas Nelson Publisher ISBN 978-0-8499-4839-8 (e-book galley) During a stint in the US Navy, Rudy Ruettinger discovered a dream in his gut—to attend Notre Dame and play football for their team. One of fourteen children, Rudy was never expected to succeed by teachers, partly because of an undiagnosed learning disability that resulted in poor grades. During school years his life was headed for trouble. How he accomplished his dream anyway is a heart-warming story that challenges readers to follow his example. Rudy always worked hard and then spent the time and effort to be even better. After his early dreams were amazingly fulfilled, he dreamed about a movie of his life---to inspire others with hope. That dream required years of perseverance and hard work--and discovering he’d sometimes trusted the wrong people. After graduating from college, he tried several careers and eventually found where he belonged. Rudy made and spent a great deal of money. However, in the great recession of 2008, he lost huge amounts. Discouraged for a while, Rudy regained hope in an unexpected way. The honesty in this story of his struggles assures readers that their dreams can become reality.

I have seen the movie Rudy several times. It is one of my favorite all time movies. Now the book; Rudy, is here and it is as good, if not better than the movie. The book goes into more detail and the back story of Rudy's life is so inspiring. I recommend this book, not only to sports fans, but to anyone that has been knocked down in life. Rudy's story is one that we all can learn a lot about life. We all are going to have those seasons where nothing goes right, but not to give up. Keep on getting back up time and time again. Rudy demonstrates this figuratively and physically. Rudy is truly a All American hero. His life does proof that if you preserver that good things will happen. Get this book today! For those of you who haven’t seen the movie or read the book—watch or read it now—Rudy Ruettiger is a man from a small Illinois town where he was likely to spend his life working in the local power plant. He didn’t do well in school because of an undiagnosed learning disability, didn’t have a lot of money, didn’t have a lot going for him. But through a lot of perseverance, he got accepted into a community college, then into Notre Dame (his dream school), and finally made the Notre Dame football team as a walk-on, which was his ultimate goal. Rudy: My Story isn’t just a repeat of the movie. The book goes into depth and presents story lines that the movie doesn’t have time to develop. Ruettiger gives more of his background in the book than in the movie, which makes his motivation and his passion more understandable for the reader. Ruettiger also describes his college life outside of Notre Dame football more in depth, detailing experiences that aren’t included in the movie at all. And finally, Ruettiger tells his post-Notre Dame story, including the process of turning his life into a movie, which may have taken more perseverance than making the Notre Dame football team as a walk-on. Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely. Before reading the book, I was a little worried that I was going to be reading a replica of the movie. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that, while the movie stayed true to the theme and the major points of Rudy’s story, the book held many interesting and important details that I enjoyed learning. I found myself even more impressed by Rudy’s character and stamina after reading the book. Although I did enjoy the book overall, though, I did not particularly enjoy the beginning or the end. The introduction felt repetitive to me—honestly, I’m not sure I needed to read it at all. The last two or three chapters also felt a little repetitive. I already got the message of Rudy throughout the book, and the last few chapters just seemed to repeat the message over and over…and over again. By the last few pages, I was just ready to be done—which was a little disappointing, since I’d enjoyed the rest of the book so much. If you are a fan of sports motivational books—or just need a good inspiring book to read—check out Rudy: My Story. It’s certainly worth the read!

Review of Rudy by Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger I'm not really into sports, so I wasn't really sure if this book would be that interesting to me, and I was kinda hesitant about reviewing it, but it turned out to be a very good book - not the best book, I probably give it a 3, 3.5 star rating, but it wasn't the worst book by far, and I think I would recommend it, even to people who don't have any knowledge about sports. :)

The movie, "Rudy" is one of my all time favorite movies and when I got the chance to review this book by Rudy himself, I jumped at the chance! I have been inspired by the movie but the book far outshines the movie in inspiration! If you saw the movie, you'll notice right away that there are some definite changes from the movie to his real life. These changes were made in the movie to make it more "theatrical". So even if you saw the movie, you still need to read the book to get the real story! Rudy is a part of a large family who loved Notre Dame football. It became his dream to play for the Notre Dame football team, but given that he didn't care much for school, this was really an almost impossible dream. He takes us through his life and how he accomplished this dream as well as the dream of making the movie, "Rudy". What I also liked about this book was that it brings us up to date on what Rudy is doing now. He is totally honest in his book - the ups and the downs. I love how he is always looking on the bright side of things and how he re-thinks things to go upward and forward. Be prepared to laugh out loud, but have the tissues handy as you'll shed a few tears here and there, too. I highly recommend this book. I loved it and I know you will, too!
