Following the bombing of his home his family live with his aunt in another city where he meets Helena, a Jewish girl, who becomes his first girlfriend, although his brother Jozef has other ideas!
Tragedy leads Ryszard to join Armia Krajowa (the Polish Underground) where he befriends Franz. Eventually captured by the Nazis, he is enslaved in a worker's camp, escaping when the Allies bombed the township of Oranienburg. He and Franz make a gruelling journey to the German border, meeting up with other survivors with the same idea.
