EXCERPT:
"Dragon," Alanta whispered, as though he might deny it.
He nodded grandly, and even that slight movement was all strength and majesty. Alanta had thought herself royal, but she felt woefully inadequate compared with the creature that now gazed upon her.
His hand swept above her head, freeing her from her chains. Alanta fell forward, her arms aching and exhausted from their long ordeal, but the dragon caught her. The strength she felt in his arms sent an unexpected thrill through her. He held her before him, his powerful hands holding her shoulders possessively as he examined her. She could meet his blazing eyes only briefly before looking away. His hands moved slowly up over her body to cup her face. Strange and cool, she shivered beneath them, aware that it was not merely fear that caused her to do so.
"You are untouched," he said.
"Yes," she replied, still unable to speak above a whisper.
"Good. I will take you now."
She frowned, not understanding until he tugged at the sleeves of her dress, pulling it from her shoulders and down her body, exposing her breasts to the cool evening air. She gasped, her hands moving to his, though it was only a gesture. She could not have stopped him had he insisted on continuing.
"Please," she said, "please don't."
He paused and shook his head, as though he did not understand. "Are you not the sacrifice? Have you not offered yourself to me? I take only what is mine."
