CHAPTER 1

Samantha lived on the beautiful island of Bermuda. She could see two lovely beaches with clear blue water, lots of low hanging trees and beautiful flower gardens from her bedroom window. A winding road went down to one of the pink-speckled sandy beaches. "Hmmm," thought Samantha. "There are many places to hide in my neighborhood."

Samantha loved to play games. She especially loved to play hide-and-go-seek. One day when everyone was at home, Samantha wanted to play. "Mommy, Daddy," she called, "Can we all play hide-and-go-seek?" Mommy said, "Yes." Daddy nodded his head and her sister, Bernadette, and brother, Bartholomew, came running to play too.

It was Samantha's turn to hide first. She thought really hard. She wanted to hide in the best spot ever. Then she had a bright idea. She looked to the left. She looked to the right. She didn't see anyone, so she ran as fast as she could to her secret hiding place. She crossed her fingers. She closed her eyes tightly. Samantha was sure no one would find her.

Soon everyone began looking for Samantha. Her brother, Bartholomew, peeked under her bed. It looked dark and spooky but Samantha was not there.

Where, oh where was Samantha?

Samantha's sister, Bernadette, peeked in the closet. There were lots of pretty dresses, colourful shoes, fancy hats and beautiful Barbie dolls, but there was no Samantha. Bernadette looked behind the dresser and peered out of the window. She did not see Samantha.

Where, oh where was Samantha?

Mommy looked in the kitchen. She pulled up the red-checkered tablecloth and looked under the table. She glanced in the cabinets where she kept the pots and pans. She looked in the tall broom closet. But Samantha was not in any of those places.

Where, oh where was Samantha?

Daddy checked in the backyard. He climbed the tall poinciana tree. He gazed to the left. He gazed to the right, but he could not find Samantha. He even looked in Freckles' doghouse, but Samantha was not there.

Where, oh where was Samantha?

No one could find Samantha. Everyone had searched in all her favourite places, but Samantha was not hiding in any of them. She was not under the winding staircase that led to the cellar. She was not in the tall grass where creepy crawling creatures lay sleeping. Samantha had not curled up in her daddy's leather chair.

Where, oh where was Samantha?

Samantha was not hiding in the tall, green grass that led to the pink, sandy beach. She was not hiding in the tomato patch where yellow and black striped caterpillars lay sleeping. Samantha was not hiding in the high oleander bushes that lined the bank.

Where, oh where was Samantha?

Time went by; still no one had found Samantha. Bartholomew sat on the back steps staring out at the calm, blue ocean. Bernadette curled up in a ball in Samantha's favourite chair. Daddy looked very sad. But Mommy kept saying, "Find Samantha. Please find Samantha."

Where, oh where was Samantha?

Bernadette patted Freckles' head. She whispered in his ear.

"Please find Samantha, Freckles."

Barking excitedly, Freckles dashed over the grassy hill. He sniffed under his best grey rock. He sprinted to the sand pile at the end of the street, but he did not find Samantha.

Where, oh where was Samantha?
