Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
How do we measure volume? Temperature? Time? In this title, a part of the "Amazing Science" series, Eboch cleverly uses something that most kids are familiar with, chocolate chip cookies, to explore the measurement systems used in science and in this case the chemistry of cooking. Recipes call for a certain size pan; Eboch discusses measuring length and area. Ingredients need to be measured; Eboch discusses volume. Cookies need to be baked; Eboch discusses temperature. While nothing startling happens, the recipe and the progress of the two bakers keep the book nicely tied together. The book works well both as a read-from-cover-to-cover and as a reference. For example, young readers can find the word "weight" in the "Table of Contents" and then the discussion of that topic on page eighteen. The "Fun Fact" sidebars offer tidbits about how the measuring systems are used in the real world. Illustrations are easily understood. Back matter includes a chocolate chip cookie recipe, an index, and a glossary. For more information, young readers are invited to search facthound.com where the publisher has vetted the links.
