About the Author

Tony Giles is a totally blind and partially deaf independent traveller. Presently, he has visited one hundred and fifteen countries, every state of the USA and all seven of the world’s continents. Tony was born blind, but had light sensitivity until aged twelve; he became partially deaf at the age six. His first overseas adventure was on a school trip to Boston, USA, 1995. However, it was not until studying in South Carolina, USA in 2000 that Tony’s independent travels began. He visited New Orleans, Louisiana and had an unforgettable experience! After completing his American Studies degree in 2001, Tony undertook a five-month adventure to Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam and Thailand. During this trip, Tony bungee jumped, touched the Great Barrier Reef, had a mud massage, walked on a glacier and drove a jetboat! These tales, along with his earlier exploits in the USA, are documented in Tony’s first travel biography, Seeing the World My Way. Tony has continued travelling, despite having a kidney transplant in 2008. Tony loves backpacking and enjoys participating in adrenaline fuelled sports. Activities include; sea kayaking, canopy zip lining, etc. When home, Tony spends time listening to classic rock music, including artists - Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Steve Miller Band. He also enjoys listening to audio books. Favourite authors include - Steven King, Jack Higgins, Lee Child, Patricia Cornwell and Jeffery Deaver. Tony’s favourite food is sausage! He also enjoys spaghetti bolognese, souvlaki, and a good pizza! Tony says the best food he’s ever eaten was in Vietnam and the tastiest meat was camel. He lives alone in Devon, England and has a Greek girlfriend who is also blind. His family all reside in Weston-super-Mare, southwest England, where Tony grew up. At present, he is writing a book about his travels in southern Africa.
