Overview

The Shadow Thieves by Anne Ursu, Eric Fortune

See that girl, the one with the bright red hair, overstuffed backpack, and aura of grumpiness? That's Charlotte Mielswetzski. And something extra-ordinary is about to happen to her.

Oh, it's not the very cute kitten that appears out of nowhere and demands to go home with her. It's not the sudden arrival of her cousin Zee, who believes he's the cause of a mysterious sickness that has struck his friends back in England. It's not her creepy English teacher Mr. Metos, who takes his mythology lessons just a little too seriously. And it's not the white-faced, yellow-eyed men in tuxedoes, who follow Charlotte everywhere.

What's so extraordinary is not any one of these things....It's all of them. And when Charlotte's friends start to get sick one by one, Charlotte and Zee set out to find a cure. Their quest leads them to a not-so-mythical Underworld, where they face rhyme-loving Harpies, gods with personnel problems, and ghosts with a thirst for blood.

Charlotte and Zee learn that in a world overrun by Nightmares, Pain, and Death, the really dangerous character is a guy named Phil. And then they discover that the fate of every person -- living and dead -- is in their young hands.

In her dazzling debut for young readers, Anne Ursu weaves a tale of myth and adventure, danger and magic that will keep readers engrossed until the very last secret is revealed.

Complete fail at writing a book about Greek mythology. If you want a good mythology book, read Rick Riordan.

This book came out in 2006. Ikd about your town but the PJ craze didn't start in my state until 2009, when the Last Olympian came out. Also, the charactors and gods are completely different. Stop saying it is based on Percy Jackson just because it is about mytholigy. I have always loved reading mytholigy books, so I can tell you that there were fiction books about Greek mytholigy before Percy Jackson, and ther will be books about Greek mytholigy after. Percy Jackson just made this genre populor to those who didn't already love reading it. Also, about this book, I loved it. Though it was slow in the beginning, it picks up and has non-stop action afterward. I am going to get the next book soon.

We have a tradition in our family that I read books to my two youngest before bed. As they've grown older, it's been increasingly difficult to find books that I can read which not only entertain me, but also capture the attention of a 15 year old girl and an 11 year old boy. The Shadow Thieves succeeds on all three levels with its charming intelligence, clever wit, and exciting plot. Anne Ursu has a wonderful ear for dialogue and all of us were delighted with her ironic sense of humor. It's a special book that can draw us away from our video and internet diversions, so we're anxiously awaiting the next installment. In the interim, we'll read this one again.

The author just goes into TOO much detail when she describes every little thing, and it gets silly after a while. Also, some parts were a little boring and made me dread reading this book. Lastly though, some of the chapters were WAY too confusing. This is greek mythology here, and if you don't know all the characters you need to make sure the author is explaining each one... and that's not really what Ms. Ursu does.. It was okay other than that though.... ha-ha! :)

When I first saw this book, I was hesitant to buy it. I don't like to read or learn about Greek Mythology. I never have. But this book was so entertaining!! The narrator was so witty, that I sometimes couldn't help but smile and laugh. The story was good and easy to read, but it was also very fun to read. The characters were lovable, and it was hard for me to put it down because I wanted to find out what happened to them! So read this book! You will love it!

I read this book and was throughouly disappointed with the outcome. it wasn't at all beleivable, and it was much too predictable. i don't know if i just have high standards when it comes to books, but this one was just terrible. WEll, i suppose terrible is too strong of a word, it was not very good. I may be 13, but i think it was sort of more like a childrens book like my 9 year old brother would like, but that's just my opinion.

This book is really lame. It is just a disappointment for Greek myths. This book is really boring and dull. At first the writing looks really interesting, it is sarcastic and funny, but the book doesn’t offer any more than that, and it gets really boring. This book doesn’t has any “adventure” it is just a succession of really predictable events, which makes it even more boring. This book is great for a little 9 year old kid who doesn’t know about mythology and is getting started on it. But for bigger people, who are supposed to have a more developed sense of reading, and are supposed to know even more about mythology, this book is just really bad. I’m a big fan of Greek mythology in general, I really like the original myths and have always been entertained reading them. This book is just lame when it comes to mythology, the author didn’t even put things that are in the original myths. If you read this book and you don’t know about mythology you will be left with a bad sense of how the Underworld really is. Examples: The dead people don’t wander around doing anything, that just silly. Also in the last chapter there’s a little information on how the dead go to the Underworld, Ursu forgot to tell a big part of it, when you got to the Underworld there are three judges. They judge your actions and decide what you are going to do for the rest of eternity. If you were a really bad person you would go to Tartarus (this is kind of mentioned in the book) but if you werea good person you just don’t go to wonder, they put you to do something. Also, Cerberus isn’t just a normal puppy, he is a big and horrible three headed dog that would kill anything that tries to go past him, Hercules had to drag him out of the Underworld as on of his tasks, and it is said it was the most difficult one, you cant just go and pet Cerberus like if he was a normal dog, that is just REALLY silly. The way Hades is also portrayed is very disappointing; a god wouldn’t act like that. At last, the plot of this book is just lame. It is a big coincidence that Charlotte knows all that mythology by just reading a book, from the way she is described she doesn’t seems like a girl who would sit and read. The villain is also really lame and cliché. It doesn’t even looks like he is the villain. The plot of the shadows being taken to take over the Underworld because there was a bureaucracy going on was just really poor and lame. If you want to get a strong and well prepared sense of Greek mythology you should read Percy Jackson. Rick Riordan knows how to put up a good mythology book. And not just Greek mythology, there’s also Roman and Egyptian mythology by Rick Riordan. Finally I just want to say that my experience reading this book was really disappointing. I couldn’t wait to finish it so then I could move on to another book. The Shadow Thieves by Anne Ursu really disappointed me.

I mean the Percy Jackson series are good and all...bit I think this series is actually much better. I know the Percy Jackson series are supposed to be funny and all but, the Cronus Chronicles are much more humorous. So if you like modern mythology and humor and books that are just freaking AWESOME! So, use those things called fingers beg your parents for money and buy this book. Ok. -ichigo tachikawa
