I think even for those who've never read any of the Liad books and stories would find this a good introduction. If you enjoy living inside, for the duration of the read, a different culture/world, this is a delight. It is also short enough to be read in one sitting, and, with a satisfying resolution. For those familiar with Liad and Korval it is a Must Have! The main character, Vertu, had a walk-in, or more of a drive-in part since she is a taxi driver, taking Cheever to Korval. No High House here although she is Delm of a very small Clan at the beginning. Both the good, her melant'i, her handling of situations with Terrans, Mercs, and later SureBleak residents, and the bad, her treatment by the Council, makes for not only a memorable protagonist but also more insight into the cultures.

You know, when I read "I DARE" I wondered about all those mercs arriving at the scene in taxis. There must be a story behind that, I said to myself. And here it is.

Cab-driver view of the attack on Solcintra and the move to Surebleak. An interesting side story, from a perspective we don't see much of.

This annual chapbook tells the story of the cabdriver who drove Cheever McFarland to Korval one day and who, sometime later, drove Higdon's troops to battle when Korval took Liad back from its enemies. She ended up exiled to Surebleak and struggling to make her way until she met McFarland again.
