Chapter One

Sleuthy Gumshoe and the Case of the Missing Frog

Sleuthy Gumshoe, The Remarkable Detective, was reading the morning newspaper and drinking his coffee when the telephone rang.

Sleuthy's assistant, Daisy Starr, answered the phone, listened for a moment, and then said, "Sleuthy, Bryce is on the phone. He's lost his pet frog, Hoppy, and he seems very sad."

Daisy handed Sleuthy the phone.

"Hello there, son," Sleuthy said. "I understand that you've lost Hoppy. Tell me about him."

Bryce started talking so fast that he began stuttering. "Hello, hello, yes— yes, sir, my name is Bryce, and I've lost my frog, Hoppy. He's—he's green with bumps, and—and he has big, big eyes, and, and—"

Sleuthy gently interrupted and calmed the boy down, assuring him everything was going to be okay. He asked Bryce where he lived and told him that he—Sleuthy Gumshoe, The Remarkable Detective—would be at Bryce's house shortly.

Sleuthy put on his brown topcoat and picked up his favorite cane. Peering at himself in the hall mirror of his oak paneled office, he combed his gray hair, twirled the ends of his bushy mustache, and put on his top hat. He was off to solve another mystery.

As Sleuthy approached the house, he saw a little boy standing on the front lawn holding a shiny metal cage. The boy rubbed the sleeve of his shirt across his eyes wiping away tears as he came running to greet Sleuthy Gumshoe.

"Mr. Gumshoe?" asked the boy.

"At your service, and you must be Bryce," Sleuthy replied. "Let's get right to work to solve this case. When and where did you see Hoppy last?"

"Hoppy was in his cage at breakfast. I always bring him bugs for his breakfast. I put his cage under that giant tree over there," Bryce explained, pointing to the old, gnarled oak tree. "I wanted him to be cool because my mom said it was going to be very hot today. When I came outside again after my breakfast, Hoppy's cage was turned on its side, and the door was open."

"Bryce, what do frogs like to do?" Sleuthy asked.

Bryce thought for a moment. "Well, they like water, Mr. Gumshoe. Maybe Hoppy left his home to go swimming."

"Good thinking, Bryce. Let's search your yard for puddles," Sleuthy suggested.

Sleuthy and Bryce began their search.

They walked down the winding brick path through the flower garden with all its dazzling colors. They continued through the cool pine forest where a wooden swing hung from one of the many tree limbs. They passed the tidy vegetable garden with big, bright red tomatoes, florets of broccoli and dangling string beans—but there was still no sign of Hoppy.

Bryce was getting very worried. Sleuthy and Bryce continued along the pebbled trail to the apple orchard and then crossed under the grape arbor, past the blueberry bushes, and up the green, grassy hill toward the house.

"Bryce, your land is so lush with growth. Everything looks healthy. Your mom and dad must keep these gardens well watered," Sleuthy observed.

"Yes, my parents take very special care of our home. They water the gardens every day with the hose that's connected right there by the house," Bryce proudly said as they walked toward the coiled-up hose.

"Bryce, what is sometimes lying underneath a hose?" Sleuthy asked.
