About the Author

Michael D. Thole was born and raised in northern Minnesota, the youngest of three siblings. He attended school in Laporte, went to college at CLC in Brainerd, and through the years he applied little of what he learned to his professional life. Switching back to "first person" now, I had a dream when I was a kid. The only two things I remember clearly about that dream are that I was running away, and there was a steep hill. Every other thing in my first book branched off of those two things. I'm writing my second book now, partly based on improvised lyrics to an "accidental" musical collaboration with my then 1-year old son.

CHAPTER 1

Yesterday Casey decided to run Far from her home and from everyone.

She'd held herself back for so long from her dreams Of holding a star in her hands as it gleams.

It was time now, though she was still worried And her house disappeared behind her as she hurried.

Casey realized she had run up a hill That was covered in snow and her face felt a chill.

Her friend waited there with a smile and a sled. She knew what he'd say. "Come with me", her friend said.

They raced down the hill. Casey saw through snow snowing Just what she was after. A thing, small and glowing.

They flew to the bottom, then up the sled went. They soared through the air, with no sign of descent.

The small glowing thing got just a bit brighter, And Casey said "We're going there, where it's lighter!"
