Description: This small animal pharmacology book is filled with many tables and diagrams, and an occasional black-and-white photograph.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the editor, is to bridge the basic science of pharmacology and clinical application of therapeutics and consolidate this information into one book. The scope of therapeutics is limited to the practice of small animal species. This is a valuable addition to a group of pharmacology books that are heavily weighted toward the basic science of pharmacology or tend toward a listing of drugs in an encyclopedic manner.
Audience: Although the author offers no target audience, this will be an excellent resource for students, general practitioners, and specialists. The extensive information includes therapy used in most areas of specialty medicine (e g. oncology, neurology, cardiology) as well as basic antimicrobial therapy and drug distribution/pharmacokinetics. The editor is one of the top clinical pharmacologists in the country.
Features: An extensive amount of pharmacology is covered, including treatment of specific classes of organisms, treatment by organ systems, and general pharmacology. In addition, topics that are not typically covered in pharmacology books are presented here, including anesthesia, pain management, blood products, and fluid therapy. The chapters are well written and easy to read. Important information obtained from basic science is presented without long discussion on research data. References are extensive and complete. Tables and diagrams are easy to read and visually pleasing.
Assessment: This is a high quality book and I would recommend it as a reference for students and private practitioners. I used this book as a reference for a book chapter I wrote. This would be a nice basic text for veterinary pharmacology courses.
