The angel hung his head, he knew the day would come when Tessa would insist on going. When she would want to live in the world. The human world...and he'd hoped to talk her out of it when that day came. Now he wasn’t so sure he could.
In fact, he was damn sure he there was nothing he could say to change her mind. Taking a deep breath, Kael looked up at the stars. “I do not think it is wise for you to live in the open, but I cannot stop you. If you do this, then it is my duty to follow. I will go with you.”
Tessa's head dropped, and her shoulders slouched, he just didn’t get it. Kael never got it. She was tired of being his duty, and she was almost certain he gave up the right to think of her as such when he killed her father.
“Kael. I don’t want to be your duty.” She stood to walk towards him once more and when she was close enough, she reached out and took his hand in hers. Leaving him no choice but face her.
“Kael if you are going to remain with me, it has to be because you choose to. Because you want to. Because you want me. Understand? Otherwise It’s time for me to find someone…something who can and does.”
Kael understood.
Oh how well he understood. Even more, how much he wanted to say yes. Yes he wanted her! Yes he would stay with her always! Yes she was so much more than just his fucking job! She was his world, his reason, his love!
But he didn’t, he didn’t say anything, he just looked at her, flat and emotionless.
“I’m alone Kael and I’m tired. If I am going to live forever, it cant be like this.”
“This?” he questioned. He knew what she meant. He knew exactly what she meant but…deep down, he was a coward.
“Alone and afraid.”
“Tessa…” he said in a low, but firm whisper. “There is nothing more for either of us to be.” And with a flutter he was gone, leaving her on the roof top to consider his words.
It wasn’t the first time she had asked for such a thing, but now she knew for certain this would be the last.
So did he.
