About the Author

William Peterfield Trent (1862-1939) was born in Richmond, Virginia. A professor of English literature at Columbia University, he also taught at Sewanee, The University of the South. While living in the town, he founded The Sewanee Review. His works include books on Daniel Defoe, Robert E. Lee, John Milton, Longfellow, and other subjects.
