Rabbi Avraham (Avi) Weiss is senior rabbi of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, the Bayit, in New York. He is also the founding president of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah (yct), the Modern and Open Orthodox rabbinical school in New York, and cofounder of the International Rabbinic Fellowship (irf), an international organization of Modern Orthodox rabbis. Most recently, he founded Yeshivat Maharat, a school ordaining women to become halakhic decisors and Jewish spiritual leaders. Rabbi Weiss served as National Chairman of the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry (sssj) from 1982 to 1990 and subsequently as National President of amcha – the Coalition for Jewish Concerns, raising a voice of moral conscience on behalf of the Jewish People and humankind throughout the world. He is the author of Women at Prayer and Spiritual Activism, and the editor of the Haggadah for the Yom HaShoah Seder.
