Overview

Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind

Spring Awakening is the German dramatist Frank Wedekind's first major play and a seminal work in the modern history of theatre. It was written sometime between autumn 1890 and spring 1891, but did not receive its first performance until 20 November 1906, when it premiered at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin under the direction of Max Reinhardt. It carries the sub-title A Children's Tragedy. The play criticizes the sexually-oppressive culture of 19th century Germany and offers a vivid dramatization of the erotic fantasies that it breeds. Due to the controversial subject matter (puberty, sexuality, rape, child abuse, homosexuality, suicide, abortion), the play has often been banned or censored.

Frank Wedekind was definetly a head of his time when he written this beautiful play. Epsecially at his time but it even fits in now in these days too. Many years ago this play was actually consider too racy to be performed on stage. The cenors wouldn't permit it at first, but today it a huge hit in Broadway and won so many Tony awards. The story takes place in the late 1891 set in Germany. About sexual maturity of youths at a time when teachers & parents want to repress those urges or even talk about sex to their kids.'Ofcourse it's a huge mistake for anyone to do at any child. No matter what these urges will awake.' It leaves them clueless in the matter. Which has the main characters helpless of any knowledge of puberty, love and reproduction. This play is strong drama. It haves it's bit of humor. The ending was so great, sad and unforgetable moral. I give this book 2 thumbs up. It is so worth the reading. The play will leave you thinking, understanding also open your your mind & heart. There'd nothing wrong with that at all.

All it says is that the play is as disturbing now as it was before. Okay? I dont think that is going to hook any readers. Loved the play and I am a huge Jonathan Groff fan. I bet he will become even more popular after becoming a Disney Prince! The adapter of the play really seems like the kind of guy I would like to have a conversation with. You should read his little snidbit in that ten dollar spring awakenkng book
