Maryel Henderson combines her love for children, writing, and illustrating to create Squirt Saves the Day. She has a degree in Art Education and encourages her students to "tell a story" with their art. She grew up in rural Pennsylvania and has always enjoyed capturing children's attention by telling them colorful and amusing stories. She is now putting those stories to paper.

CHAPTER 1

My name is Squirt. I grew up in a family with 88 brothers and sisters. You may think that's a lot but, you see, I am a stinkbug and stinkbugs have very large families!

I was very colorful so I stuck out when my mom was looking for help with the chores.

"Hey you, the bright-colored one. I could use a little help washing the dishes."

As much as I loved my mom and as much as I liked to help, I really wanted to see the world. So when I was two weeks old I left home.

I quickly found out that being on my own was not much fun. Nobody wanted to hire a stinkbug!

The very next day my luck changed for the better. I was sitting in a little ice cream shop sipping on a strawberry milkshake. I was thinking about giving up and going back home, when the cutest little pink frog I ever saw hopped in and plopped down on a stool next to mine. "My name is Darby!" she croaked. We instantly became friends and when she told me she had always loved stinkbugs, I cheered!

Darby and I had a GREAT summer, but I was not looking forward to starting first grade.

The first day of school arrived, and I stood trembling on the school steps.

"What if nobody likes me?" I thought. I could feel my heart pounding. And worse, "What if someone steps on me?!"

I knew I would be the smallest kid in my whole school. My knees shook.
