Chapter One

Steve the stickleback

Was a shiny silver fish.

He had three spines on his back where other fish have a fin.

Although Steve was full grown he was little more than three inches long. It was the beginning of April and this was a very special spring for Steve and his best friend Stanley.

For the first time they were old enough to build nests and be fathers. They were very excited. It was a long journey to the place where they would build their nests. They were not exactly sure where they were going.

Steve and Stanley began swimming. They swam through some big rocks.

They swam under a boat. Then they went through a field of tall underwater grass.

As they were coming out of the grass they saw some big fish. Steve and Stanley were scared. They decided to hide in the grass until the big fish swam away.

The water wasn't as deep now and they found a stream. For some reason Steve felt like this was the place he had to go. He thought maybe he had been here before when he was much younger.

Stanley looked at it but did not feel it was right for him. Stanley told his friend he would keep looking for another stream. "See you later Steve," he said. "See ya," said Steve.
