CHAPTER 1

THE PIONEERS


Early experiments — Charlotte Dundas — Fulton's Clermont — The Comet — Early Thames steamers — Channel crossings — The beginning of the ocean steamships.


The paddle-wheel has been in use for centuries. There is evidence that the Romans experimented with paddle-wheels in ships, using oxen to supply the power. It would seem that the experiments were not very successful as the long-oared galley is best known as the typical vessel of those times. The Chinese are believed to have used man-powered paddle-wheels in their warships during the seventh century and throughout the ages various ideas have been put forward to use this form of propulsion.

Leonardo da Vinci, who invented just about everything, produced drawings in the year 1500 showing a vessel paddle-propelled and driven by two pedals, thus anticipating the 'pedalo' by some four centuries. In 1543 a Spanish sea-captain, Blasco de Garay, submitted plans to the Emperor Carlos V for a machine that would propel a ship 'without the aid of oars or sail'. The idea is said to have been tried in a ship called Trinidad in Barcelona Bay. The paddle-wheels were each turned by 25 men and the vessel attained a speed of 3.5 m.p.h.

The development of steam power also has a long history, starting with Hero of Alexandria's re-action device in about A.D. 50.

Many scientists and inventors of the past wrote vaguely about the possibility of 'driving up water by fire', but it was Denis Papin, a Frenchman, who first proposed the use of steam to propel a ship. It is known that he built a paddle boat in 1707, but whether it was driven by steam or 'par la force humaine' is a subject of argument among historians. The following year Papin submitted a paper to the Royal Society proposing the construction of a steamboat. The proposal was never acted upon, but it would appear that Papin was the first man to see the possibility of a practical paddle steamer.

After Papin's death, in 1714, numerous attempts to harness steam-power for ship propulsion were made, particularly in France.

In 1783 the Marquis De Jouffroy D'Abbans launched his steamboat, the 'Pyroscaphe', on the river Saone, near Lyons. It sailed under steam power for 15 minutes. The engine was a horizontal, double acting cylinder of 25.6 inches diameter with a stroke of 77 inches. The piston rod operated a double ratchet mechanism which produced a continuous rotative motion at the paddle-shaft.

Many of the engines used in these early experiments were designed by, or based on the design of, the English steam pioneer Thomas Newcomen. Newcomen himself had little interest in marine engineering and it was left to William Symington to design an engine for steamboat experiments.

In 1788 Symington was commissioned by Patrick Miller, a wealthy banker, who had earlier experimented with manual paddle-ships. The engine, which is still preserved in the Science Museum in London, consisted of two vertical cylinders, 4 inches diameter by 18 inches stroke. The two pistons were connected by chains to a drum which rotated in opposite directions alternately. The two paddle-wheels were mounted on shafts on each of which were two pulleys with internal ratchet teeth. Between each pair of pulleys was a disc fitted with two pawls. The pulleys were turned in opposite directions by chains from the drum and the teeth on the ratchet wheels engaged with the pawls to drive the paddle-wheels continuously in one direction.

The boat was double-hulled, catarmaran style, and the engine was located in one hull with the boiler in the other. The paddle-wheels were placed between the hulls in tandem. Principal dimensions of the boat were: displacement, about five tons, length 25ft, breadth 7ft, and draught 2.2ft. On October 14th, 1788, the vessel was tried on Dalwinston Lake, near Dumfries, and reached a speed of 5 m.p.h. On board were Miller, Symington, James Taylor, Alexander Nasmyth and the poet, Robert Burns.

Two years earlier, the American inventor, John Fitch, had achieved some success with an extraordinary contrivance which used 12 vertical oars. The oars were mounted six on each side and were operated by a steam engine of Fitch's own design.

As the six forward oars dipped and rose from the water they were followed by the rear bank of six and so propelled the ship in canoe-like fashion. Fitch followed this with a larger version in 1788, and two days before Patrick Miller's experiment the vessel steamed from Philadelphia to Burlington on the Delaware river, a distance of 20 miles. There were thirty passengers on board and the average speed for the journey was 5.5 knots.

After the success of his engine in the Miller boat, Symington obtained financial aid from Lord Dundas of Kerse, and in 1801 was launched the vessel that is reckoned to be the first successful steamship.

The Charlotte Dundas was built of wood by Alexander Hart at Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, and was 56ft long with a beam of 18ft and a depth of 8ft. Symington introduced several improvements in the design of the engine, a single, direct acting cylinder was used, 22 inches diameter and 4ft stroke. The engine developed 10 nominal horsepower (N.H.P.) and drove a single, rear-mounted paddle via an overhanging crank on the paddle-shaft. The paddle-wheel was housed in a recess 4ft wide by 12ft long and was totally enclosed. It was the intention of Lord Dundas to use the vessel on the Forth and Clyde Canal as a steam tug. In March 1802 trials were carried out and the Charlotte Dundas hauled two 70-ton barges over a distance of 19.5 miles in six hours, and this against a strong headwind.

The canal owners, however, were not impressed. They claimed that the wash from the vessel would damage the canal bank and banned its use. Symington was reduced to poverty and died in 1831. The Charlotte Dundas was left abandoned in a creek and was broken up in 1861.

The shortsightedness of the canal owners robbed Britain of being the home of the first commercially successful steamboat. That honour must go to the American, Robert Fulton and his ship the P.S. Clermont. Fulton had visited Scotland and gained much useful knowledge from his observations of the Charlotte Dundas trials. He worked in France for a time and his first steamboat ran trials on the River Seine, but it was on the Hudson River in New York that the Clermont achieved success.

The vessel was 133ft in length with a breadth of 13ft and a draught of 2ft. Displacement was 100 tons. The engine was British, supplied by Messrs. Boulton, Watt & Co. and was of 20 nominal h.p. The single cylinder, 24 inches diameter by 4ft stroke, drove two side paddlewheels of 15ft diameter through a series of bellcranks and spur gears designed by Fulton. The first trial took place on 17th August, 1807, and the speed attained was 4.7 m.p.h.

The Clermont ran as a packet between New York and Albany until 1807-8 when she was rebuilt and renamed North River. She then continued to serve for another seven years.

Fulton was not only a clever engineer but a good businessman as well. He gained the monopoly of the steamboat trade on the Hudson and was thereby indirectly responsible for the first sea-going voyage of a paddle-steamer. Two other Americans, John Stevens and his son Robert, built their paddle steamer Phoenix in 1807 at Hoboken, New York. But because of Fulton's monopoly they were forced to take the ship via the open sea to Philadelphia where she ran as a packet for several years. The voyage was made in a severe gale and is, therefore, all the more remarkable for a vessel built for river work.

Britain, and Europe, had to wait until 1812 before a paddle steamer was built that was to run a regular service.

Henry Bell's Comet, begun in 1811, was named after the comet of that year. Her hull had bluff lines with a clipper stem and square stern. Principle dimensions were: length 51ft, breadth over paddle-boxes 15ft and draught 4ft. Comet's engines were built by John Robertson of Glasgow and is now preserved in the Science Museum in London. It had a vertical cylinder, 12.5 inches diameter by 16 inches stroke, and drove two rods and half side levers via a crosshead. A connecting rod worked the overhanging crankshaft which carried a 6ft flywheel and a spur gear for driving the paddlewheels. The Comet had a tall funnel to which was attached a yardarm and sail, a feature which was to be copied in many subsequent steamships.

The ship was not an instant success. Clydesiders viewed her with suspicion, maintaining that it was only a matter of time before she blew up. Such gloomy predictions brought scores of children to the river bank every time she passed by, but they were to be disappointed. Soon the Comet was a familiar sight on the river, gradually the fears were overcome and the ship became an object of affection. In 1819 Bell used the vessel between the West Highlands and Glasgow. The following year she ran ashore at Craignish Point and was totally wrecked.

The success of the Comet encouraged other boat builders and in 1814 another paddle steamer, the Margery, appeared on the Clyde. The Margery was slightly larger than the Comet, 73ft overall with a 10 n.p.h. engine, and she also used her tall single funnel as a mainmast.

After running on the Clyde for a short time she was purchased by Messrs. Anthony Cortis and Co., of London, but transporting her to the Thames presented something of a problem. She was too wide to pass through the locks on the Forth and Clyde canal so her paddle-wheels and sponsons were removed to allow her to be towed up to the Firth of Forth. From there she sailed down the east coast, using her mainsail and entered the Thames in January 1815. Only a few days after her arrival she was at work, operating a public service between London and Gravesend on alternate days. At the end of her first season the steamer was sold to a French firm and renamed Elise. Under the command of her new captain she sailed to Newhaven and thence across the Channel to Havre.

This was the first Channel crossing by a steamship, a journey that took seventeen hours in strong southerly winds.

The Margery's appearance on the Thames was greeted with astonishment by Londoners, for to many of them she was something entirely new. History books generally acknowledge her as being the first paddle steamer to operate on the Thames, but in the previous year a small steamer had gone into service on the London-Richmond route. She was the Richmond, a 50-ton vessel with a 10 h.p. Maudslay bell-crank engine. Like the Comet she was greeted with considerable apprehension. The Watermen, who saw their trade jeopardised by the new vessel, fostered the fears with stories of fire and boiler explosions.

Unfortunately their predictions came true, for on the 28th June, 1817, her boiler burst just after the steamer had passed under Westminster Bridge on her way to Richmond.

Despite this and various other mishaps the popularity of the paddle steamers grew. The country's shipyards began to build them in growing numbers and regular services were established from London to Gravesend, Greenock to Belfast and Holyhead to Dublin. In 1821 the 90 ton steamer Rob Roy started the Dover-Calais service.

These short sea crossings disproved the belief that paddle steamers, or 'butterfly boats' as the deep sea sailors called them, were too frail for sea-going voyages.

Their ruggedness was further proved by the remarkable voyage of the P.S. Thames. Originally named Argyle, the steamer was built at Glasgow in 1814 and worked on the Clyde for a while. In 1815 she was sold to a London company who were faced with the same trouble of delivery as that encountered by the owners of the Margery. Rather than make the structural alterations necessary to move her through the Forth and Clyde canal it was decided to take the ship down the west coast via Milford Haven and Lands End.

The steamer left Glasgow in May 1815 with a crew of nine and crossed first to Dublin. Heavy seas kept her speed down to 3 knots and her 16 h.p. engines and 9ft diameter paddle-wheels must have been hard put to maintain headway.

On 28th May she sailed for Wexford and thence to Milford Haven. During this part of the journey there was trouble with the paddlewheels and one floatboard had to be cut from each. Continuing around Lands End she was twice approached by boats from the shore where onlookers had reported that she was on fire. She was, in fact, the first steamer to be seen in those waters. The voyage continued without further incident up the Channel and on to the Thames where she reached London on 12th June. A month later the ship went into service on the London-Margate run, and a report in the Times of 8th July 1815 described her as a rapid, spacious and splendid vessel with well appointed cabins, a choice library and a stewardess to attend upon the needs of the fair sex.

The P.S. Thames ran on this route for one season after which she was withdrawn in favour of a larger vessel, the Regent. The Regent's career was also shortlived, but she was a ship worthy of mention as she was the first steamboat to be built on the river Thames. Her engines drove each paddle-wheel independently and she was lightly constructed to obtain high speed. On July 2nd, 1817, the ship caught fire whilst off Whitstable and was completely burnt out. The 40 passengers and crew of 10 were all rescued by boats putting off from the shore.

Fire was an ever-present hazard on these early vessels built, as they were, entirely of wood.

Their furnaces were often of the external type and the danger from red-hot ashes and sparks led to a number of ships being completely destroyed. The danger was lessened in the iron-built ships that followed, and the first to be built was the Aaron Manby. The ship was laid down at the Horseley Iron Works near Tipton, Staffordshire, in 1821. The master of the works was Aaron Manby and the new vessel was a joint venture between Manby, his son Charles and Captain Charles Napier, later Admiral Sir Charles Napier. The hull was constructed of quarter-inch thick iron plates lapped and riveted. The single deck was of wood, as were the beams that supported it.

The vessel was designed for cargo-carrying and the hold was separated from the engine room by two bulkheads, one of iron and the other of wood.

The 47ft tall funnel ensured that sparks would be carried well away from the deck and, as was the practice of the day, it also served as a mast. The engines, rated at 30 n.p.h., consisted of two oscillating cylinders and were designed by Aaron Manby. Two 12ft diameter paddle-wheels, with floats 30 inches wide, were fitted and the ship had an average speed of 7 knots. This was quite a respectable speed for a ship of her size; 120ft long, 23ft wide and a burden of 116 tons.

The hull was transported in sections from the Horseley works to Rotherhithe on the Thames where the final assembly was completed.

Trials took place in May 1822 and the first commercial voyage was made the following month. Under the command of Captain Napier, and with Charles Manby as engineer, the Aaron Manby crossed the Channel to Havre with a cargo of iron and linseed. From there she proceeded up the River Seine to Paris, where the sight of an iron ship caused great surprise and considerable disbelief. But another step forward in the development of the steamship had been taken. The Aaron Manby was the first iron-built vessel to put to sea, and the first ship to sail direct from London to Paris.

And so the steamship was born. During the thirty years after Patrick Miller's first success the development of the paddle steamer made rapid progress.

Their shallow draught and the good manoeuvrability made them particularly suitable for river and coastal work, and it was in those waters that they were to reign supreme for 150 years. Before long the marine engineers of the time began to consider the possibilities of the paddle steamer as an ocean-going vessel. Opposition from the ship-owners was strong. This was the era of the windjammers and clipper ships, ships that could travel at speeds that would be no disgrace today, if the wind and tide was in their favour. But the advantages of travelling in a straight line, regardless of the elements, could not be ignored. In 1818 an American schooner, the Savannah, was fitted with an auxiliary engine and paddles.

On 24th May, 1819, she left Savannah, bound for Liverpool. The voyage attracted a great deal of attention and the Savannah is often described as the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. In fact her engines were used only for about 80 hours of the journey, but it marked the beginning of the steamship on the oceans of the world.
