About the Author

Sun Tzu was a Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher who lived in the Spring and Autumn period of ancient China. He has had a significant impact on Chinese and Asian history and culture, both as the author of ‘The Art of War’ and as a legendary historical figure.

Gaius Julius Caesar (d. 44 BC) was a Roman general, statesman, Consul, and notable author of Latin prose.

Einhard (c. 770-840) was a Frankish scholar and courtier. He was a dedicated servant of Charlemagne and his son Louis the Pious.

Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469-1527) was a Florentine historian, politician, diplomat, philosopher, humanist, and writer during the Renaissance.

Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) was a Prussian general and military theorist who stressed the psychological and political aspects of war. His most notable work, On War, was unfinished at his death. Clausewitz was a realist who drew heavily on the rationalist ideas of the European Enlightenment.

Charles Jean Jacques Joseph Ardant du Picq (1821-1870) was a French Army officer and military theorist of the mid-19th century whose writings later had a great effect on French military theory and doctrine.
