This is a multiauthored review on the relationships between stress or heat shock proteins and certain aspects of diseases, such as infections, autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, and degenerative tissue diseases. Although one of the many reviews on stress proteins published during the last few years, the book is a milestone in that it marks the transition of a basic research field to applied sciences like biomedicine. The book is the first comprehensive review of the wide variety of investigations made on the topic of stress proteins in disease. It spans from a brief but very precise description of the chemistry and biology of the stress proteins to specialized contributions, such as their protective role against myocardial damage. The book is organized into clusters that describe the basic functions of stress proteins, the involvement in specific immune responses, stress protein expression in diseased tissue, and the interaction with immune-competent cells. The audience addressed includes physicians, cell biologists, immunologists, and microbiologists. The list of authors reads in part like a who's who for biomedical research, including many pioneers of heat shock protein research. A certain weakness of the book is its focus on immunology (19 of 36 contributions deal with this aspect of stress proteins). However, historically, immune regulation is indeed the first biomedical aspect detected for stress proteins. The illustrations are of high quality. Each contribution contains a representative list of very updated references. The index is small and does not always allow one to find a particular key word or aspect. This book provides a compilation of information for either activeresearchers in the field or readers with a more general interest.
