She lived at a time when apartheid reared its ugly head and she was forced to run the gauntlet of her abusive fellow peers. Survival was the name of the game but through it all she emerged a stronger, more assured person. She was devoted to her family through all their trials and tribulations and would always go the extra mile to make sure they achieved their potential. She was always occupied, be it as a teacher and latterly a registered nurse where she had to prove her adaptability. That she came it through it all was a credit to her and her family.

The author, L. S. Samuels was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa seventy-one years ago. She had a tough upbringing and found life hard through various family and personal relationships. After a spell as a teacher she entered the nursing profession and became a registered nurse. She helped out in clinics in various capacities and also acted as a midwife.She experienced tragedy and pain, principally when her daughter drowned in a swimming pool. But she has overcome adversity and says when hardship drags you down you should take a step back and remember you are not alone because there are outside forces waiting for you to be rescued. She says there is always a way out for you to discover. You should never give up because you are a survivor.L. S. has now retired and lives in Tunbridge Wells. She likes to spend some of her spare time in the gym.
