Description: This book presents the basic cosmetic surgical procedures for aspiring facial plastic surgeons. It is a basic guide for novice or early practitioners.
Purpose: It is designed as a reference and an atlas on facial cosmetic procedures that are commonly encountered. The authors state that they pursue a "distinctive approach" to this book by highlighting tried and true paths for successful outcomes while circumventing pitfalls. The book does touch upon these areas, but due to its slender size, it only partially achieves its aspirations.
Audience: The authors are seasoned facial plastic surgeons who vary in their ability to transcribe their thoughts with the same purpose and clarity. A plethora of books over the years have dealt with these topics from various perspectives. Although the book is meant as an indoctrination for novices, it is not sufficiently detailed to do so. However, some chapters, such as those on anatomy and skin rejuvenation, are more successful at providing a strong knowledge base.
Features: The book delves into the evaluation of the aging face, relevant anatomy, techniques for facial lifting (both standardized and with threads techniques), tightening of the overlying soft tissues and muscles, and enhancement though the use of implants. Upper facial rejuvenation and lifting, inclusive of the forehead and orbital zones are integrated into this grouping. Subsequent chapters detail skin rejuvenation and soft tissue fillers and discuss facial rejuvenation of patients of African and East Asian ethnicity. Hair replacement and surgery of the aging nose are also covered. Chapters use drawings, diagrams, and photographs to depict before and after results as well as some intraoperative surgical details. Two chapters that may have greater interest for neophyte surgeons discuss the development, maintenance, and scheduling protocols necessary to start and maintain a cosmetic practice. The future of facial plastic surgery is the ultimate discussion in this book.
Assessment: This is but one of a multitude of books on facial rejuvenation surgery. A book authored by disparate yet skilled facial surgeons, such as this one, have varying degrees of utility. This book contains numerous pearls of wisdom and relevant advice useful for younger facial surgeons. Nevertheless, on the whole, it is neither an atlas nor an in-depth reference on the subject.
