Description: This efficiently written book describes surgical techniques and procedures for the knee. Designed to be a how-to reference for orthopedic surgeons to easily digest the specifics of techniques in review or preparation for surgery, the book does not bog readers down in background, debate, or history. Rather, it jumps right in and details "how to do it" with all of the related pearls and pitfalls.
Purpose: Indeed, it is this exact purpose for which the book is written, "...to describe operative procedures in a straightforward and succinct fashion." These clearly are worthy objectives especially in the busy life of orthopedic surgeons who do not wish to sift through background information, but want to get the down-and-dirty information on how to approach or perform a specific procedure. Each chapter accomplishes this goal nicely, making the book a valuable acquisition for practicing orthopedists.
Audience: This is a book that will be not be hidden on the shelf, but commonly used by general orthopedic surgeons in preparation for knee cases that they perform less frequently. It is a great preparatory read for orthopedic residents, fellows, and even established practitioners before they begin a myriad of knee surgeries. The key editors hail from the prestigious Insall/Scott/Kelly Center and credit at least some of their academic heritage to the great John Insall. Chapter contributors range from distinguished professors to assistant professors at various institutions, but all have remained true to the focus of creating an efficient how-to text on surgical techniques for the knee.
Features: Clearly, the gift of this book is its focus on specific techniques. The drawings and pictures are worth more than the proverbial thousand words and assist the authors in accomplishing the goals of passing on techniques in the most efficient fashion. If I had any suggestions for the authors, it would be to subdivide the table of contents into categories with headings rather than the sequential list of topics. This would make it easier to find a topic to improve efficiency of use. In addition, while I respect the decision to minimize references in keeping with the purpose of the book, I would include a larger suggested reading list at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: Overall, this is a most impressive addition to our armamentarium. I am confident it will be one of the most frequently used books in our library for orthopedic residents to prepare for cases. I strongly recommend it. Readers will not be disappointed.
