The first part focuses on the preparatory knowledge of anatomy, surgical techniques, and planning regarding glioma surgery. Concepts such as functional networks, their preservations, and required techniques, as well as brain mapping are discussed. In the second part, gliomas of varying location are presented, with detailed descriptions of higher-level planning, surgical approaches, and maximal gross total resection when possible. The last part discusses recurrence, complex gliomas unable to obtain gross total resection, and pearls on resection.
Purpose: The purpose is to familiarize readers with the basics of treating gliomas via surgical approaches tailored to various locations, complexity, and resectability. The book does a fantastic job meeting these vitally important objectives, covering the basics to more complex techniques of glioma surgery.

The author's years of practice and prior contributions to this field of neurosurgery deem him a credible authority on the book's topics.
Features: The first part of the book contains seven chapters. The initial chapter discusses why "better" glioma surgery matters, including the author's perspective and a review of recent literature. The author then transitions to his "three laws of glioma surgery": preservation of arteries, preservation of white matter fibers (prep planning), and the perception of maximal gross total resection with the actual degree of resection. The next chapter describes the surface and gross anatomy of the brain and the need for understanding this anatomy in conjunction with image guidance. There is detailed discussion of the anatomy of each lobe via radiographic imaging as well as illustrations. Of particular benefit is the inclusion of the insula, which is vital for treating insular gliomas yet often overlooked by anatomy sources. The following chapter pays specific attention to macroconnectomic networks, and discusses pushing the limits of classical teachings. The author dispels some of the myths of glioma surgery, such as the notion that speech, vision, and motor cortex are to be avoided in surgery and the reality of what is thought to be inoperable. This chapter could benefit from a more robust incorporation of literature rather than an opinion piece. The next chapter on white matter anatomy of the cerebrum focuses on the basics of anatomical importance of fibers and intricacies of white matter connections. This is an important chapter in understanding preservation of functionality in glioma resection. The radiographic contributions and overlay of fiber tracts are essential in understating this concept and are well done. Next, there is a brief discussion of awake brain mapping, which is important in patient selection, prep planning, and introduction to mapping techniques, but requires more extensive discussion of intraoperative stimulations for mappings. The second part contains seven chapters. Functional Testing for Brain Mapping discusses various testing techniques based on the location compromised by the glioma. Though a simple review, it is important to understand the patient's baseline and their obvious and more subtle deficits when aiming to preserve or sacrifice function. Going from Scan to Plan in a Glioma Surgery focuses on the need to understand the trajectory and planning of craniotomy, regions that could or should be sacrificed, and final goals of surgery. The most important learning points for residents and early physicians can be gleaned from the chapters on frontal, temporal, insular, parietal, occipital, and difficult gliomas. The radiographic images, illustrations, and surgical imaging presented are crucial for planning and understanding nuances of these surgeries. The third and final part contains three chapters on recurrent gliomas, gliomas that are not fully resectable, as well as techniques.
Assessment: This book contains simple language, intuitive illustrations, and important case displays for understanding glioma surgeries. The division of gliomas by region with subsequent in-depth discussions are its strengths. The underlying simplification through an expert's eyes allows beginner neurosurgeons to gain confidence in planning and performing surgery on all gliomas, from simple to complex.
