About the Author

Don Stuart lobbied the Washington State Legislature for over 20 years while employed by the commercial fishing industry, conservation districts, and later American Farmland Trust, a national nonprofit working to protect agricultural land and improve its environmental performance. Don's legislative work helped create the Washington State Conservation Commission's Office of Farmland Preservation (https://scc.wa.gov/office-of-farmland-preservation) and the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program's Farmland Preservation Grants Program, (https://www.rco.wa.gov/grants/farmland.shtml). Don has also been a U.S. Navy JAGC officer, a practicing trial attorney, a candidate for U.S. Congress, spokesman and campaign manager in defending against a statewide ballot initiative, an Alaska commercial salmon fisherman, and he personally built and then skippered the 47' commercial salmon troller, F/V Nightwings.
