Overview

Polly Perkins can hardly believe her luck when she is taken on as under-housemaid at Swallowcliffe Hall. At first it's all she can do to keep up, with endless fires to be laid and beds to be made, never mind when guests arrive from London for a country house party. Will she ever feel at home in this grand old house, full of whispers and ghosts from the past? But friendship and comfort are found in unexpected places and Polly slowly becomes used to her new life - until the discovery of a tragic secret tests her loyalty to the Vye family. When a young American heiress comes to stay at the Hall, Polly must decide whether now is the time to reveal what she knows.

A fascinating insight into the world of country house servants in Victorian times, with extracts from contemporary manuals and etiquette guides at the start of each chapter.

About the Author

After studying English Literature at Bristol University, I worked in publishing before deciding to write stories of my own. I've had about twenty-five books published for children and teens, including the popular 'Party Girls' series. I was inspired to write the 'Swallowcliffe Hall' trilogy partly by visits to beautiful old English country houses and partly by a silver housekeeper's chatelaine I found when clearing out my late father-in-law's flat. And who knows, maybe also by the clifftop boarding school I attended as a teenager, converted from a Victorian mansion with a sweeeping marble staircase and glass cases full of stuffed birds.

Now I live in London with my husband, two cats and a dog, and occasional visits from our grown-up sons. I'm currently writing another title in the 'Swallowcliffe Hall' series: 'Eugenie's Story', in which the Vyes' elder daughter embarks on the all-important task of finding a suitable husband.
