Description: The primary focus of this book is an advanced systematic mapping review and classification of emergency departments. The authors want to relate the problems, methods, and solutions used by experts who are familiar with ER operations. The authors compiled past and current research from 1964 to 2018. The book also centers on the patient's experience in the ER and the ways in which it can be enhanced. There are many structural elements such as charts, graphs, definitions, and multiple references from many nations.
Purpose: The purpose is to present all research related to ER operations. In order to accomplish this, the authors developed six research questions which were organized by an advanced mapping methodology and data mining. The authors wanted to obtain an understanding of the problems associated with all emergency rooms and reanalyze the methods and solutions used in the research studies. The authors examined common themes that are present in all ERs, e.g., efficiency, admission effectiveness, discharge interventions, care analysis, management of common indications, use of ehealth systems, differences among ERs, identification of quality problems, and suggested plans for improvement. The book basically suggests that an analytical decision-making process should be used to assess care delivery based on performance.
Audience: The book is appropriate for various audiences such as healthcare workers, academic researchers, and professors/instructors. The book is especially geared for healthcare professionals who are familiar with hospital and emergency room operations. The book may meet the needs of the intended audience, but it can be a little confusing. The authors are well versed in the area of computer technology and mathematics. They conclude that emergency management involves complex factors and an analytical decision-making process should be used to assess health technology based on performance.
Features: The book provides comprehensive background as an introduction to the research performed by the authors. The background includes graphics that support the background information, e.g., simulation modeling, simulation data from other countries, data collection types both in a normal simulation model and one in the hazard mode. The book includes the research method used, which includes the questions, primary studies, study selection, data extraction, and validation tools. The results of the research are listed in response to the six questions originally selected (techniques, themes, publishing questions, illustration of the results, method of problem resolution, and classification of research. There is a discussion of the systematic review of the quality care. The book contains a succinct conclusion and ideas for future research. The book needs review and correction in spelling and grammar. A suggestion would be to enlist an editor of the book who would eliminate these errors and ensure accuracy.
Assessment: This compendium of research is valuable to healthcare professionals. The authors believe that an analytical decision-making process should be used to assess health technology based on performance. They have applied a mathematical model to ED operations. The research is mapped that assists in procuring a solution. They offer several recommendations which include continuous training and simulations and comprehensive information analyses. The authors believe that evidence-based practice is an outcome of using a structure, framework, process, and a scientific classification in determining the existing obstacles to evidence-based practice.
