About the Author

J. J. Wenrich is a Certified Financial Planner and 20-year veteran of the investment world. He developed his fascination with the stock market as a child, watching business reports on PBS, one of the few stations available in his small-town Kansas home. During freezing winters and blazing summers, he was inside learning about what he calls “the amazing world of stocks.” Despite his small-town upbringing, J.J. had progressive teachers along the way who included personal finance education and stock-picking games in their curriculum.
His professors at The University of Kansas reinforced his love of the stock market. So much that he spent spring break on campus watching CNBC all night with stock charts and spreadsheets as he followed equity markets around the world.
Since then, he met his wife Jodie—also a financial professional at the time—and together they built a family “portfolio” including Jodie’s son and another three children born within 30 months. This family is the foundation of J.J.’s lessons on educating kids (and grown-ups) about healthy financial habits and Teaching Kids to Buy Stocks.
J. J. also runs a financial coaching practice, Dollars and Zen.

The author has been in the investing business for over 20 years; he’s a Certified Financial Planner; a motivational speaker and has a financial coaching practice known as Dollars and Zen. The author’s interest in the stock market began when he was a child watching one of four TV channels available to folks living in Wichita. In those days, news broadcasts were all the stations aired from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, and for him the stock market was the most fascinating aspect of those daily news programs. His seventh-grade teacher, Mrs. Brown, helped to further demystify the stock trading for Wenrich and the rest of his class. She had them participate in Kansas State U’s stock market game for high school and junior high students. She also arranged for a stockbroker to speak to his class and show them how to pick stocks. Wenrich was hooked.



Teaching Kids to Buy Stocks: Stories and Lessons for Grown-Ups is a must-read for anyone who’s ever wondered what they could achieve if they knew how to invest in the stock market. Most of us are intimidated by the process or have had unfortunate experiences in the past. My own foray into investing was based on, yes, a hot tip, and while I did learn quite a lot from following that ultimately doomed stock, it was overall discouraging, to say the least. Wenrich’s book was what I really needed back then and am thrilled to find now. He makes no assumptions about one’s knowledge of terminology and strategy, and he does a marvelous job of demystifying the stock market. His book is well-written, and his conversational manner of coaching makes the reader feel as if he’s being personally tutored throughout the reading experience.
