Gospel teaching that changes hearts and invites action is the goal of all teachers and parents, but ultimately, only the Spirit can teach in life-changing ways. Our role as parents and teachers is really to engage learners in order to facilitate the teaching of the Spirit. Most traditional teaching situations utilize a teacher-centered approach where little is required of the learner and results in a minimal change of heart. Teaching to Build Faith and Faithfulness offers ten strategies that focus on learner-centered instruction, with stories and examples to illustrate the principles. The ideas will en- courage parents and teachers to think of themselves as “guides” to aid and assist the influence of the Spirit and suggests practical ways to till the ground of learning, plant and nurture seeds of faith, direct learners to dependable places to find their own answers to questions, and applaud every worthy effort to grow.

About the Author

Kathy K. Clayton has taught students in junior high school, high school, and junior college. A graduate from the University of Utah, she earned her master’s degree from Azusa Pacific University in Southern California. In the Church, she has taught in the Young Woman organization as well as early morning seminary students in California and in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has also served on the International School Board in Argentina. She is married to Elder L. Whitney Clayton of the Seventy, and they are the parents of seven children.
