Few novels have been written about the 40,000 German POWs sent to camps in the United States during WWII. "Telegram" may be the most recent addition to that short list.

It's 1944. Ninety-six German POWs have arrived at a work camp in Northern Minnesota. Sauli Berglund watches the enemy soldiers from the edge of his property. His mind sees a little boy, his son Ronnie, laughing, jumping off the dock into the cool water. "Ronald Berglund, Lieutenant, U.S.Navy," the telegram had read. "Missing in action."

Sauli cannot know that three more telegrams will find him before the war is over and that Anni, his fiery daughter, will douse the flames of intolerance that threaten to engulf the community.

Wars are not always fought on the battlefield; the combatants are not always soldiers. And telegrams are not always bad news.

"Telegram" is a wartime story about peace: peace of mind, peace of spirit and the inner strength provided by a heart at peace with the world.

About the Author

L. Doug Hoffmann is the author of two other novels and a few short stories. He lives with his wife, Trish, and their two small dogs in St. Paul, MN. They will soon retire to the Suomi Hills in the Chippewa Forest of Northern Minnesota on a lake that is only a few miles from the actual POW camp in the story, "Telegram." The Suomi Hills is so rich in history, there is enough book fodder to keep Doug writing for the rest of his days.
