Oh How I Had Waited For This Follow-Up... and while it is an enjoyable enough read, it is nowhere near as charming or engrossing as its predecessor, 'A Little Night Magic.' While that novel focused on the engaging relationship of Liv and Tobias with fun doses of Stacey and Cain the conjurer, this follow-up focuses pretty much solely on Stacey with only small doses of Liv and Tobias--and an incredibly small appearance by Cain. That is all too bad because while the first half (or even 3/4) of the book gives us Stacey the sharp, the snarky, the tough--the early scenes with her mother are very good--the last quarter fell apart for me. Bogged down in a 'love connection' that goes quickly into cringe worthy dialogue (I literally counted well over a dozen repetitions of 'He pulled me into his arms' within a few pages; I nearly threw the thing across the room), over the top romantic speeches and gestures, a sex scene that is much more explicit that it needs be...I am no prude at ALL but this goes on too long and got to the point where I was just thinking 'Icky'...and maybe worse, it is obvious in the first few chapters who is bad, who is good, and where this is going to end up. If you have read the previous novel, the plot set up here is largely the same. I had waited anxiously for (3? 4? years) this, but while there are certainly moments where you can get caught up in Stacey's story, the second half was pure letdown for me. IF there is another in this series, I hope the author brings back a greater balance between Liv, Tobias, Stacey--even Stacey's mom, The Widow, would be a welcome addition. But I truly hope another installment does not focus on Peach, Leo, or any of the newly introduced characters. They are just not engaging enough for me.
