CHAPTER 1
Alex was wondering what adventure he wanted to go on today. His mother, Laura, suggested going to the beach. Alex replied, "Yeah, what a great idea, Mom!"
So Alex packed up his arm floaties, duck raft, nose plugs, goggles, snorkel, and black flippers, and he put on his favorite red polka-dot bathing suit.
Alex liked to make friends and was hoping to find a new friend to share this adventure with.
He could share all the wonderful things he learned from nature with the animals he would meet.
Alex's mother dropped him off at the beach boardwalk and said, "Alex, make sure you watch out for the riptides. Make sure you swim sideways, parallel to the beach, until you have swum out of the strong current."
Alex replied, "Okay, Mom. I'll remember to swim sideways to the beach if I'm caught in a riptide."
Alex was ready to start his adventure.
He had his arm floaties, duck raft, nose plugs, goggles, snorkel, black flippers, and his favorite red polka-dot bathing suit.
While in the water, Alex saw a small grey fin skimming on top of the water.
Then, to Alex's surprise, a dolphin named Dusty popped his head out of the water right in front of Alex!
"Hola," said Dusty. "That means 'Hi' in Spanish."
"Hi," said Alex. "I'm on an adventure!"
Dusty was from Mexico and up the coast for vacation. Dusty liked that Alex was on an adventure. "I like that you're having fun and learning," he said.
"Did you know that you are caught in a riptide?" said Dusty. "Can you feel the water pulling you out to sea?"
Alex quickly remembered what his mom had told him back at the boardwalk and told Dusty that he needed to make sure to swim sideways along the beach until he was out of the strong current.
Dusty said, "Don't worry, amigo, we both have flippers to give us more power when we are swimming."
Alex was happy he remembered to put on his flippers for this adventure.
Alex pushed his strong legs through the water and made it back to the shore in no time.
"Adios, amigo," said Dusty. "Gracias for the learning adventure."
Alex was pleased he met Dusty, and he waved good–bye.
Laura was waiting at the boardwalk for Alex when he arrived after his adventure.
"Did you meet any new friends, Alex?" she asked.
"Yes, Mom, I did," said Alex. "Dusty the dolphin, was on vacation from Mexico."
Alex said, "You were right, Mom. We got caught in a riptide! Dusty showed me that the flippers on my feet were perfect for speeding sideways along the shore."
Alex thought about his adventure all the way home from the beach. He couldn't wait to go on another adventure, learn more about nature, and meet new animal friends.
"Hmmm," Alex said to himself. "What to do next weekend?"
