CHAPTER 1

Once upon a time, in a forest not far from where you live, stood a large oak tree, and at the bottom of this oak tree was a little red door. Behind this little red door lived a family of mice: Bibole, the son; Rivol, the father; and Michelle, the mother.

It was a Saturday morning; Bibole got out of bed, stretching and scratching his tummy. He got dressed and headed straight to the kitchen, knowing his mother makes his favorite breakfast every Saturday—pancakes with blueberries! As Bibole walked down the hall, he could hear his mom and dad talking like they always do. As he got closer to the kitchen, he heard his mother say, "I wish someone would do something about that smell. I just know Bibole's going to smell it, and then there's going to be all kinds of questions that we're going to have to answer." Bibole listened even harder than he's ever listened before, trying his best not to make a sound.

As he listened, he wished he could, for once, have ears like Marsell the skunk. Marsell could hear an ant burp. That's how good his hearing was. Bibole overheard his father say, "You know, I think he's old enough for us to show him." Michelle calmly mixed the blueberries into the pancake batter, not saying a word. By this time, Bibole was going crazy. What are they talking about? What smell am I not supposed to smell? And what am I old enough for? All these questions and I haven't even had breakfast yet. I'm too young to be getting stressed like this! Bibole let out a big sigh.

"Bibole! Is that you?" For a second, Bibole forgot to breathe. Then he realized he'd done nothing wrong. Bibole answered, "Yes, Mother, it's me."

"Well, come sit down and have some breakfast with us. I've made your favorite."

The smell of pancakes was a familiar smell for he had them every Saturday, except this day was a little different. There was something in the air. Bibole couldn't put his finger on it, but he knew something was different. Then it hit him like a giant wave. The smell filled his nose where he couldn't even smell the pancakes anymore. How strange. It's the best smell ever, yet why haven't I smelled that beautiful smell before?

"Mom! Dad! Do you smell that?" His mother and father didn't look up from what they were doing.

"Yes, son, we smell it."

"Well, what is it? It's the best smell ever! It's making me hungry!"

Michelle tried to get his mind off that smell by tempting him with pancakes and blueberries.

"If you don't mind, I'd like to go outside and see if I can get a better whiff of that amazing smell."

Rivol butted in and made a suggestion, "Why don't you eat your breakfast first, then when your tummy is full, you can see if that smell still smells as good as you think it does."

Bibole ate his breakfast as fast as he could as he feared the amazing smell would go away, and he'd never smell it again. When he finished eating, he jumped out of his chair and yelled back at his parents, "I'll be back soon!" And out the door he went.

Outside, Bibole walked through the forest, sniffing, following that wonderful smell. He was bound and determined to find the cause of it. He was driven as if on a mission. Running as fast as he could, stopping here and there to catch his breath, Bibole then saw something odd, which made him stop and investigate. He saw his friends Bonny the bunny, Marsell the skunk, and Hurman and Fauna, the deer. They were all huddled together, as if whispering to one another, their heads all together in a circle.
