CHAPTER 1
Who Are You?
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, in the tall, tall forests of the east, lived a boy named Robbie. Robbie was not too tall, not too short, not too chubby, and not too thin, but just right for hugging and loving, which is what he loved the most. His hair was dark, he liked wearing plaid shirts, baggy pants, fuzzy socks, and he wore eyeglasses.
Robbie lived with his mother and grand father in an old farmhouse built many, many years ago. Although the farmhouse looked old on the outside, inside was filled with warmth and love for all who entered. The sounds of laughter filled each room. The warm scent of delicious meals, cooking on the stove, cookies filled every jar, and the coffee pot was always ready to share with friends and neighbors whenever they stopped by. Robbie was an important part of this household, and loved by all who met him.
Robbie was a very happy boy, always smiling and giving love and hugs to everyone he met. He always helped his mother with chores and never ever had an unkind word or even a bad day. He helped his grandfather with fun things and brightened up a room wherever he went. Robbie was a very special boy filled with very special kindness and smiles every day. Although he was not able to do many things that other children could do, he did enjoy singing songs, playing musical instruments and just being a warm spirit that filled the old farmhouse with joy.
One bright, warm spring day, Robbie asked his mother if he could go out and play. She said, "Yes, of course, but don't forget to wear your glasses." Since Robbie was a special boy, he needed to wear eyeglasses to help him see. "Yes, mother, I will be sure to wear them," and went along outside to play.
Robbie walked up to the big barn that his grandfather built many years ago. His grandfather, who everyone called Pop, was working on his tool bench and Robbie asked if he needed any help. Pop replied, "Not right now Robbie, but thank you for asking – you are always so helpful. Why don't you go ahead and play." Robbie was overjoyed and went for a stroll along the small goldfish pond that was in the back yard.
The goldfish pond was a favorite place for the entire family to sit near and enjoy the delicate flowers planted along the banks, after a long hot summer day. A perfect spot to enjoy a glass of cool tea, watch the little birdies, and listen to the sounds of tree frogs and crickets in the warm evening. This was a favorite spot for Robbie and he enjoyed the natural sights and sounds nearly every day. The pond was not too deep, but Robbie was always careful not to go too close or fall in.
As he bent over to inspect a tiny speckled frog sitting on a rock, his eyeglasses went bloop, and fell into the water. "Oh no," thought Robbie. "What will mother say?"
"Not to worry little man, I will help you find them!" "What, who, where did that voice come from?" exclaimed Robbie. "Down here. Look down here. Here they are. We found them for you!" Robbie bent down close to the ground to get a better look and noticed a tiny little creature with large eyes staring up at him, handing him his eyeglasses. The wee creature was a tiny, red ball of fur with large eyes wearing big round eyeglasses that looked much too big for his face. At the end of his tiny arms were two tiny hands.
Robbie got even closer, took his eyeglasses from the tiny creature, and said thank you. "Who are you and where did you come from?"
"Hello Robbie. My name is Red, short for Ready to Help whenever I am needed. Your glasses fell off your noggin! Luckily I was here to find them for you. I know that can happen sometimes, as I wear them too. So does all my family." "Your family?" exclaimed Robbie. "Yes, my family. We are called Goggle Noggins, and though we can't be seen by everyone, we are always there to lend a helping hand, just like you Robbie. We All wear eyeglasses of different shapes and sizes, just like you, on our noggins. We know the importance of wearing special glasses but mainly because we are on the lookout for danger and to lend a helping hand to anyone in need."
"We have lived in the tall forests of the east for centuries, helping town folk whenever we can, even though we go unnoticed at times. We are wee creatures, but very friendly and helpful and always there wherever you go. I am Red, the eldest and take care of your pond and back yard. My eyes are big and my goggles even bigger!! My goggles on my noggin are always ready to spot danger and lend a helping hand."
"There are many in my family and we are each a different color and each have a special job to take care of. Doc, my brother, is a school helper. Then there is Rosey, my little sister who helps out in the toy chest. She loves toys and giving gifts. I have many brothers and sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even some Noggins who live far, far away. Yup, too many Goggle Noggins to count actually, but we all honor the same code, to help each other and friends wherever we go."
Robbie stood up, a bit bewildered by it all, but thanked his new friend for finding his glasses. After talking with Red for a bit, he wondered if he would ever see him again. He wondered if he would ever meet other Goggle Noggins. He forgot all about the frog, but glad Red Noggin found his glasses. Should he tell his mother? Would she believe him? Robbie heard his mom call him and Pop for lunch so he brushed off his pants and headed for the house. What a morning it has been!
CHAPTER 2
A Day's Work
Robbie found it difficult to sleep through the night thinking of his new friend, Red Noggin, and dreaming about all the other Goggle Noggins. "How exciting to have a brand new friend right in your own back yard!" he thought to himself.
He woke up early the next morning and helped his mother make breakfast. Robbie and Pop had plans to work in the yard today and they both needed a good breakfast to get them started. Robbie set the table while his mom made fresh bread, scrambled eggs (which were always Pop's favorite) and wee bits of ham. "Thank you mother, it smells yummy!" Just then, he reached up and gave his mother a very large hug.
After a fine morning meal, Robbie's mom, who everyone called Miss Marie, cleaned up the dishes as Pop sat in a very large chair in the kitchen reading the weekly farm news. Pop loved to read the local news, always on the lookout for the price of hay or a cow for sale. He would share his findings with his daughter, Miss Marie, as she continued to clear the table, getting ready for her daily chores of the day.
Robbie was upstairs, by this time, getting dressed for his yard work with Pop. "Hey Robbie," exclaimed Pop. "Don't forget your work gloves. We have a lot of rough work ahead of us today." "Ok Pop, I won't."
The day was bright, warm, and sunny and it was lovely to have the windows open and hear the birds singing. Yes, it seems even the birds were happy today! As Robbie was dressing and glancing towards the window, a little voice said, "Robbie, don't forget to make your bed and brush your teeth." Robbie was not paying attention, thinking of the fun he would have being with Pop all day. The little voice said again, "Hey Robbie, your bed ..."
Catching his breath, Robbie looked around the room, thinking Red Noggin had followed him upstairs last night. He stood very still and carefully inspected each corner and then, as clear as day, he saw a little creature sitting on his windowsill.
