Two children learn about the Antarctic climate crisis in this picture-book series entry.

Kate and Tom aren’t sure where Antarctica is or why it’s important. As they watch a television show with their mother about the continent, their mother explains how important it is to the world’s climates. Due to “human causes of global warming,” some of Antarctica is “warming up three times faster than the rest of the world,” Mum explains. Sutters also introduces facts about green and red algae emerging from melted ice shelves, how phytoplankton and zooplankton help create carbon pumps for the atmosphere, and how Antarctic life may soak up more carbon than even the Amazon rainforest. But although the text offers plenty of reasons why children should care about the Antarctic and climate change, Tom, Kate, and readers aren’t left with ideas on how to help; there’s education for budding environmentalists but no call to action. Fong’s line-and-watercolor illustrations are mostly framed by a television border, emphasizing the context of the nature show Tom and Kate watch; one image is repeated, however, and an unidentified third child confusingly appears at another point. The large amount of text and challenging vocabulary make this introduction suitable for independent readers who are already invested in the topic.
