Ebola. Zika. Plague. Hemorrhagic Fever. Words to inspire fear and dread. They all can kill but are not 100 percent fatal. What do you do if a 100 percent fatal virus has been developed and could wipe out all of humanity if it got loose on any of the places in space they have colonized? That is the question for Doctor Melanie Destin. She had slid into a role of medical officer on board freighters lying between Mars and Luna to try and hide from her past and herself. In some ways, she is morally ambiguous and will do almost anything to survive. She used her position as a ship’s doctor to “earn” extra money to finance her desire to emigrate to Mars and buy citizenship by skimming alcohol and drugs from her medical stores and selling them to her crew mates. That is until a new skipper came on board and the fun-busting owners of the ship introduced prohibition for alcohol and the new captain over saw the inventory of pharmaceuticals. Unbeknownst to her, forces were at work that would place her on board a ship that was on its way to collect the deadly virus. Along the way there are spies, turncoats, friends turn out to be enemies and enemies who turn out to be friends. Everyone has secrets and hidden agendas that range from simply passing on information to schemes designed to betray everyone and blow up the ships they are on. The story drags you in and you become invested in Dr. Destin and what she has to do to survive. Along the way she is introduced to a character who appears to be a patsy for the major antagonist who has made plans within plans to betray everyone but has a very hidden agenda and is working for someone totally different. The Terrans and the Martians along with the Luna forces are all betraying and engaging in space battles and on board deceptions that keep the story moving along at a very fast page-turning pace. It was hard to put it down at any point. While all the action is going on the good doctor keeps trying to be true to herself and not get caught between the different factions. This is the first in a series. I am so looking forward to next book in the Mars Ascendant series. After reading Book 1 in the series I can’t wait to see what adventures the good Doctor Destin has in store in the next volume.
