Overview

In the United States, where we have more land than people, it is not at all difficult for persons in good health to make money. In this comparatively new field there are so many avenues of success open, so many vocations which are not crowded, that any person of either sex who is willing, at least for the time being, to engage in any respectable occupation that offers, may find lucrative employment.

About the Author

Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) was an American showman, author, businessman, politician, and con-artist. Born in Connecticut, Barnum became a small businessman in his twenties, dabbling in book sales, lotteries, and running a general store. After Connecticut outlawed lotteries, he moved to New York City and became a showman. Barnum founded "Barnum's Grand Scientific and Musical Theater," and shortly thereafter purchased a museum of oddities which showcased the famous (and fraudulent) "Feejee Mermaid," a half-monkey, half-fish creation of a taxidermist. Barnum's lasting fame came from his circus, founded in 1875. Called "P.T. Barnum's Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Hippodrome," his circus combined with the Cooper and Bailey Circus in the early 1880s, forming the Barnum and Bailey Circus (later purchased by the Ringling Bros.).
